2002: Marti claims medal at LPGA Q-School
Spain’s Paula Marti carded a final-round 71 Sept. 13 at Landmark Golf Club in Indio, Calif., to lead a group of 30 players into the final stage of LPGA qualifying.
Marti, who will be part of the European Solheim Cup team this week, finished the four-day event at 7-under 281. Three strokes back in second was Joellyn Erdmann.
Other notable players who advanced were Lee Ann Walker-Cooper (sixth) and Elisabeth Esterl (tied for seventh).
Angela Jerman made good on her only chance to advance to the final stage. Jerman sent her application and entry fee three weeks prior to the deadline but it never arrived at LPGA headquarters. Jerman was not allowed to play in the first qualifier in Venice, Fla., but was granted an exemption into the Indio qualifier.
While Marti’s steady climb to medalist honors was no shocker considering the Spaniard’s impressive Ladies European Tour record, there were plenty of surprises.
U.S. Curtis Cup team members Meredith Duncan and Courtney Swaim finished 42nd and 48th, respectively, and failed to advance to the final stage, which will be played Oct. 8-11 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
