Following the Thursday pro-am prior to the start of the Bruno’s Memorial Classic, Bruce Fleisher headed directly to the practice range.

He had a few things to work out. After about a dozen drives, Fleisher was done. Apparently it worked.

Fleisher led wire to wire in capturing the Champions Tour event May 2 at Greystone Golf & Country Club. Fleisher shot a final-round 68 to finish at 16-under-par 200 and earn a seven-stroke victory over Bruce Lietzke and D.A. Weibring.

Fleisher entered the final round with a four-stroke lead and shrugged off a two-hour delayed start from overnight rains.

“That’s always difficult, especially when you’re leading,” Fleisher said. “It was not an easy morning for me.”

He managed, however, to turn the event into a runaway.

“He just obliterated the rest of us,” said Hale Irwin, who fell from a tie for third to 20th with a final-round 75.

“Bruce was playing aggressive when he had the right yardage with the right club,” said Weibring, who shot 71 in the final round. “He played smart. The golf course came to him today.”

Fleisher led the field in birdies (18) and greens in regulation (hitting 49 of 54).

“Honest to God, so many crazy things happen in this game,” Fleisher said. “I was very focused. There’s some tough golf out there. No matter how good you’re striking it, it can come up and bite you.”

Fleisher won for the second time in 2004, adding to his triumph at the Royal Caribbean Classic in February. He is the 13th different winner in 13 Bruno’s Memorial Classics.

“He didn’t make many mistakes, and D.A. and I didn’t really put any pressure on,” said defending champion Tom Jenkins. “He was on his game.”

Lietzke, looking for his first victory of 2004, birdied five of the final nine holes in a final-round 67.
