French golf fans have been waiting for 35 years to cheer a hometown hero at the French Open, and Jean-Francois Remesy ended the wait in style.

Remesy finished 12 under par to earn a seven-shot victory, the largest margin on the PGA European Tour this season. Australian left-handers Richard Green and Nick O’Hern tied for second, but neither posted a serious challenge to Remesy.

“It is a great weekend for me and a great weekend for France,” said Remesy, moments after being thrown into a lake by fellow French players. “The reaction is unbelievable.”

French golf fans are not known for their rabid following of the sport, nor for their knowledge of the game, but Remesy said that is changing.

“The crowds were fantastic,” he said. “They used to be not so good, but now they understand golf. Even for bad shots, they tried to encourage me. They are understanding the game better than before.”
