2004: USGA Senior Amateur - Creekmore holds off Haines for Senior Women’s crown

The third time was the charm for Carolyn Creekmore at the USGA Senior Amateur Oct. 14 at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. Creekmore, 52, of Dallas, two-putted from 20 feet on the last hole for a 1-up victory over Liz Haines in the final.

“This is something you want from the time you start playing golf,” said Creekmore, who was playing in her third USGA Senior Amateur. She lost in the 2002 Senior Women’s quarterfinals to eventual champion Marlene Streit.

In the 18-hole final, Creekmore had a 2-up lead three times and was able to hold off Haines, 56, of Gladwyne, Pa. Haines cut the lead to 1 down with a birdie at No. 15, but the pair matched scores on the final three holes to give Creekmore the title.

“My name is on that trophy forever and ever,” said Creekmore, who raises horses on a 60-acre farm with her boyfriend, Donnie Anderson, a former Green Bay Packers running back. “I don’t know if I know what it means. I admire every champion, USGA champion I’ve ever met. It just is hard to imagine what it takes to win one of these, but it takes not only playing good, but it takes luck. You have to win the day you shouldn’t win, which was my first round (Creekmore trailed for the first seven holes before defeating Jill Christiansen).”
