2005: College - Methodist march continues with 8th consecutive title

Don’t look for that two-decade Methodist College dynasty to be crumbling anytime soon. The Lady Monarchs’ eighth consecutive victory at the NCAA Division III Women’s Championship came with a freshman, three sophomores and a junior doing the damage.
Methodist, playing at a course less than an hour from its Fayetteville, N.C., campus, shot 120-over-par 1,272 to capture its 18th Division III crown in 20 years with a 12-stroke victory over runner-up Mary Hardin-Baylor May 13 at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club.
“We should be all right for the next couple of years,” Methodist coach Vici Pate told the Fayetteville Observer. “We hope to keep the tradition going.”
Sophomore Charlotte Williams captured the individual championship with a 16-over 304 total (76-73-76-79), three shots ahead of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Holly Glover and five in front of Methodist freshman Katie Dick. The Lady Monarchs’ Heather Martin, a sophomore, finished eighth.
Williams entered the final round with a six-stroke lead over Glover, but the Mary Hardin-Baylor senior trimmed the lead to one stroke through 15 holes. Williams still led by a shot heading to the par-4 18th, where Williams put her approach within 5 feet, then made the birdie putt to clinch the title.
Williams is Methodist’s eighth individual national champion in 20 years, and the first since Carol Brogan in 2001.
“It’s awesome,” Williams told the Observer. “Hopefully, I can do it again. But the important thing is the team championship. That’s what you’re here for. This is a team sport for us. It’s not about the individual.”
