2005: PGA European Tour - Dodd’s 2nd triumph; Howell’s 2nd heartache

Maynooth, Ireland

Stephen Dodd earned his second PGA European Tour victory of the season, and David Howell finished a second consecutive week as an almost-winner.

And for the second week in a row, Howell lost a playoff. This time, Dodd was the beneficiary of Howell’s extra-session shortcomings, winning the Irish Open May 22 after capturing the China Open in the early stages of the 2005 campaign.

Dodd shot 68 Sunday to finish 9 under with Howell, then made birdie on the first playoff hole to again leave Howell on the outside looking in. Dodd reached the par-5 18th at Carton House Golf Club in two shots – the second being a 3-iron to 5 feet.

“It was one of those when you win or you lose,” Dodd said. “I had nothing to lose. Once I won in China, I wanted to do it again. I’ve put a lot of hard work in the last two years and now it’s paying off.”

Howell hit his second shot into the rough and failed to get up and down to match Dodd. Howell, who shot 70 Sunday, lost a playoff to Thomas Bjorn the previous week at the British Masters.

But his reaction this time was all together different.

“Last week I was gutted but today I’m not,” said Howell, who made an eagle at the par-5 15th and birdied the last hole with a 14-foot putt to force the playoff. “I needed a really strong finish just to get into the playoff. I was really proud of myself to play the last four holes in 3 under.”

At Forest of Arden the previous week, Howell failed to hit the green three consecutive times at the par-3 18th.

Angel Cabrera and Nick Dougherty shared third place, two shots behind at 281. Cabrera fired a 68 with four birdies on the last six holes at the 7,301-yard Colin Montgomerie-designed course.

Dougherty, who had a two-shot lead going into the final round, managed 74.
