2005: Newsmakers - Quigley’s travel woes put stop to ‘The Streak’

It wasn’t an ailing hip that finally snapped Dana Quigley’s nine-year competitive streak. The surprise spoiler was a series of storms July 17 that prevented the Champions Tour’s “Iron Man” from leaving Rhode Island to play in the Senior British Open at Royal Aberdeen in Scotland.

Quigley’s mind-boggling streak of 278 consecutive events for which he has been eligible, and 264 in a row, began in August 1997 at the Bank of America Championship. His last event was the Ford Senior Players Championship, where Quigley tied for fifth July 10.

“Angie (his wife) and I sat in the Providence airport for five hours on Sunday afternoon trying to get to Newark to make our Glasgow connection,” he said. “Nothing was coming in or going out due to some wicked storms. And the weather in New Jersey apparently was even worse.”

Quigley’s hip problems began in late June and, even though he doesn’t suffer an unbearable amount of discomfort while playing, he does feel pain when seated for an extended period. In fact, the Champions Tour’s leading money winner decided only Friday to make the seven-hour trekto Scotland. The 10-time senior tour winner called his withdrawal “the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make.”

Quigley plans on returning to his home in West Palm Beach, Fla., to seek more treatments for his hip before returning at the U.S. Senior Open July 28-31 in Dayton, Ohio – where he’ll start a new streak.
