2006: Round of the week
Thursday, July 7, 2011
Bowden was having a good round through 16 holes Aug. 20 at the Nationwide Tour event in Moosic, Pa. His final two holes turned it into a great one.
The Hoosier State native’s eagle-birdie finish helped lift him to his first Nationwide title of the season and, for all practical purposes, secured another return to the PGA Tour.
Bowden – who began the day tied for 15th, seven shots out of the lead, already had posted four birdies and a chip-in eagle through his first 14 holes before a three-putt from about 70 feet on the par-3 15th slowed his momentum. But he quickly regained it – and then some – by holing out a sand wedge from 101 yards from the 17th fairway for his second eagle of the day without a putt, then rolling in a 15-footer for birdie on his 72nd hole.
“My hands were shaking so damn much I just happened to shake it in the hole,” Bowden said of his putt on No. 18. “It was just one of those days.”
Bowden then made par on the first playoff hole to defeat third-round leader Jess Daley. The victory vaulted Bowden from 10th to second on the Nationwide money list with $277,621 and assured the veteran of a fourth full season on the PGA Tour (1997, 2000, ’04). The top 20 Nationwide earners receive PGA Tour cards for 2007.
