Tom Porten has been named the head men’s golf coach at Northern Illinois University. Porten will replace John Cleary, now the assistant women’s golf coach at Texas Tech.

Porten comes off a one-year stint as the director of instruction at GolfTEC Cleveland East in Beachwood, Ohio, and also spent a year coaching at first Akron and then Kent State. Before that, Porten, a native of Ohio, was the head men’s coach at Cleveland State University, where he also formed the flagship women’s program.

“Northern Illinois has made a commitment to men’s golf and I feel privileged to be able to take the program to another level,” Porten said. “I believe we can build a top tier program here.”
