Six-birdie 70 for Bryan at U.S. Amateur

TULSA, Okla. – Wesley Bryan made six birdies Tuesday at Southern Hills. All it earned him was an even-par 70, still it was probably enough to get him into match play. Bryan finished two rounds of stroke play at 7-over 147.

“Yesterday was a 77 that could’ve been a 90,” he said, “and today was a 70 that could’ve been a 63.”

Bryan made birdie putts of 20, 30 and 30 feet, respectively, on Nos. 1-3. He holed another 20-footer at No. 11 and a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-5 13th. The highlight was a 90-foot, downhill putt on the par-4 10th.

“It took at least 10 seconds for it to go in,” Bryan said. “I stopped it at the top of this hill, then it trickled down and started winding around and went right in the middle of the hole at perfect speed. It was unbelievable.”

Bryan finished second in stroke play at last year’s U.S. Amateur before losing in the second round; Bryan has also made the quarterfinals and Round of 16 in the past two U.S. Amateur Public Links. He’s not the fairways and greens type of player that you’d expect to excel at USGA events, though.

“Normally I’m a rough-to-green, trees-to-green kind of player,” he said.
