Medalist Jackson moves on easily

TULSA, Okla. – Medalist Tim Jackson won easily in the first round of the U.S. Amateur, beating John Kostis, 5 and 4. Jackson said there was no discussion about Tuesday’s slow-play penalty, though a rules official did tell the group that they arrived at the fourth tee one minute off the pace.

Jackson’s biggest concern wasn’t pace of play, but trying to avoid a letdown after winning the stroke-play portion of the Amateur. He said he was more nervous Wednesday than during the first round of the U.S. Senior Open because the Amateur truly starts, and can end, in the first round of match play.

“The medalist has traditionally had a tough go in the first round, ... so I was a little bit uptight, a little bit nervous this morning,” Jackson said. “You try to avoid having expectations. You’re starting all over.”
