Peter Uihlein vs. ‘Wrong Ron’
Wednesday, August 26, 2009
TULSA, Okla. – I was talking with Peter Uihlein shortly after he defeated James Sacheck on the 19th hole in his opening round match Wednesday at the 109th U.S. Amateur Championship.
He talked about his match, among other things. Then the conversation turned to the Walker Cup, where he remains in the running for one of the final two spots on the 10-man U.S. team which will be announced later this week, more than likely at the completion of Sunday’s final or just before it ends.
Still, very straight-faced, Uihlein asked me, “Can I ask you to do me a really big favor?”
I gave him a quizzical look and said, “I guess. What is it you want?”
He answered, now a smile slowly beginning to form, “Could you go ahead and make your picks for the final two Walker Cup spots and not include me? I mean, you being Wrong Ron and all, I think if you did that it would help my chances of getting picked. Of course, you’d make two other guys pretty mad.”
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Peter.
I guess there really is something to this Wrong Ron mystique.
