I wrote a blog Aug. 26 on the number of matches that went extra holes in an opening round. I thought the seven was extremely high and maybe even a record.
Well it was high, but not the most, as I was informed this morning from Shefty the Lefty – the USGA’s golf stat fanatic David Shefter.
According to Shefty, the most first-round extra-hole matches since 1979 was eight in 1994. The seven this year ranks second. And maybe even more startling, in 1984 there were no extra-hole matches in the opening round.
