Holland hits shot of the tournament

TULSA, Okla. – Charlie Holland advanced to the semifinals at the U.S. Amateur with one of the shots of the tournament. Holland thought his run was over after he missed a 10-foot par putt on No. 18. He removed his cap as opponent Peter Uihlein prepared to stroke an 8-foot, uphill putt for a 1-up victory.

But Uihlein mishit his putt and missed left to send the match to extra holes. On the first extra hole, Holland hit a 7-iron from 172 yards to within inches of the hole for a winning birdie.

Holland will face Clemson senior Ben Martin in the semifinals; Martin beat David Lingmerth, 2 and 1. Fresno State sophomore Bhavik Patel also advanced with a 1-up victory over former Clemson player Phillip Mollica.

One match is still on the course, as Stanford’s Steve Ziegler is in extra holes for the second consecutive round. Ziegler and Byeong-Hun An are all square through 19 holes.
