JERSEY CITY, N.J. – A limited field is getting even more limited by the minute. At last count, four players have withdrawn from The Barclays and one was been disqualified.
Camilo Villegas became the latest to leave early, and while he didn’t immediately cite a reason, one could imagine that he has 42 of them – the number of strokes he required on his first nine holes to go to 11-over par.
Earlier, Mathew Goggin withdrew after going 11 over for eight holes (18 over for the tournament). And though he was just 3 over on his round and 1 over for the tournament, Michael Letzig cited a wrist injury when he withdrew on his 36th hole.
Chris Stroud left after opening with a 77 (his wife is seven months pregnant) and then there was Steve Flesch, who made a par at the sixth hole, signed for birdie, and was thus disqualified. Not that it mattered; Flesch at 6 over would have missed the cut.
For Villegas, this playoff opener is a far cry from last year when he won twice in the playoffs.
