Puma Golf’s signing of Rickie Fowler has sparked much attention, but the company’s investment in the sport goes far beyond recruiting another spokesman.

The footwear and apparel maker just announced the creation of Puma Golf North America, a business unit dedicated exclusively to golf that will serve as the company’s official distributor and licensee in the U.S. and Canada. The move reflects Puma’s steadily growing commitment to the golf market, which it entered in 2006.

Puma Golf North America’s mission is to expand distribution of the company’s golf footwear, apparel and accessories to on- and off-course golf specialty stores, and sporting goods and online accounts. Its operations take effect immediately.

“This move will . . . strengthen our reach and focus our efforts with a core, dedicated team,” said Bob Philion, global head of Puma Golf for Puma AG.

Puma Golf is establishing a distinctive identity in the marketplace, offering fun and colorful styling that is different from what might be described as conventional golf attire. Its tour staff includes Rickie Fowler, Geoff Ogilvy, Johan Edfors, Jeff Overton and Anna Nordqvist.
