Matteo Manassero: Tiger Slayer
Sunday, July 19, 2009
TURNBERRY, Scotland – It was 8:15 p.m., the sun was still up, and Turnberry was growing quiet. Except, that is, for the small crowd gathered around 16-year-old Matteo Manassero.
The reigning British Amateur champion from Italy had a few hours earlier finished at 2 over to earn a share of 13th and the prestigious silver medal, but as he walked to the locker room for the final time he was stopped for a series of autographs.
He signed each one. Then, a man showered Manassero with so much praise the young man blushed and tried to deflect much of it.
“You’re great,” the man said. “You beat Tiger.”
