Best deals: Mount Washington Resort
Monday, June 1, 2009
Mount Washington Hotel is best known for having hosted the Bretton Woods International Conference in 1944, which sometimes obscures the fact that, after the brutal New Hampshire winters, it morphs into one of the Northeast’s best golf destinations. The resort’s Donald Ross design, which reopened last summer following a Brian Silva restoration, is ranked No. 1 on Golfweek’s Best list of public courses in the Granite State.
If you act quickly, you can take advantage of the resort’s R&R package. Through June 30, a couple can stay at the hotel for two nights and play two rounds of golf for $500 (total not including 8 percent meals and lodging tax and $20 nightly amenity fee). By comparison, regular packages start at about $559 per night. R&R guests who don’t want to play golf can opt for a 50-minute spa treatment or the Bretton Woods Canopy Tour, a descent of more than 1,000 feet along tree-top zip lines.
While in New Hampshire, fans of Ross’ work might want to drive north to Balsams Grand Hotel to play Panorama, ranked No. 3 in the state. Its Golf Free Package, available through June 30, starts at $119 per night. That covers lodging, golf and breakfast.
Golf free or die? Not quite – but not bad.
