LPGA to proceed with Tour finale
Monday, June 1, 2009
The LPGA announced it will proceed with its season-ending Tour Championship even without a title sponsor.
The fate of the event came under question when Stanford Financial became the target of a federal investigation. Several LPGA tournaments already have been nixed because of sponsor woes, but the tour and event owner IMG seemed determined to preserve the finale.
The tournament, scheduled for Nov. 17-22, will be played at The Houstonian Golf & Country Club, marking the tour’s first visit to Texas in nearly six years. The LPGA’s last visit to the state was in 2003 for the Samsung World Championship in Houston.
The LPGA Tour Championship will offer a $1.5 million purse, officials said May 26.
The event’s format calls for a cut after 36 holes, trimming the field of 120 to the low 70 professionals, and another cut after 54 holes to set the stage for the top 30 players to compete in the final round.
