Furyk: 'Quit ticking him off'

Monday, June 8, 2009

After Tiger Woods shot a closing 65 and won the Memorial, Jim Furyk said he wished the news media “would just quit (ticking) him off ... so he has to come back and keep proving stuff.”

When I first saw that, it reminded me immediately of Lee Trevino’s pleas during the Jack Nicklaus era.

“Don’t wake up the Bear!” Trevino would say. “Don’t wake him up! Let him sleep!”

Same deal, different millennium.

P.S. I am fairly certain this is the first time Jim Furyk’s quotes has been compared to Lee Trevino’s. And probably the last.
