Better be long at Bethpage

I’m not sure how many players have a chance to win next week’s U.S. Open at Bethpage Black. Maybe 20. Maybe 10. Maybe one.

I do know this: I talked with Peter Kostis on Tuesday right after he left Bethpage, which he visited with student Paul Casey for a practice round. And the picture Kostis painted doesn’t augur well for non-bombers.

“It rained an inch and a half the day before, so we saw a course that measured 7,400 yards but played like 8,400,” the instructor said. “If the conditions are wet like that, I don’t see the medium-length hitter having a prayer. But if it firms up ...”
