Ciganda, Munoz advance at British Am

Carlota Ciganda hits a tee shot at the 2008 U. S. Women's Amateur Championship in Eugene, Oregon at Eugene Country Club.

Two former Arizona State teammates easily made it past the first two rounds of match play Thursday at the Ladies British Amateur Championship in Wales.

Carlota Ciganda (pictured), a rising Sun Devils sophomore, breezed through her matches, defeating Celine Kortekaas, 5 and 4, in the morning, before dispatching Sally Watson, 3 and 2, in the afternoon. Azahara Munoz, who graduated from Arizona State last month, needed 20 holes to defeat Katherine O’Connor before knocking out Alexandra Peters, 4 and 3, in the afternoon.

Ciganda and Munoz, both from Spain, had the top seeds in the match play bracket after finishing as co-medalists in stroke-play qualifying (Ciganda received the No. 1 seed as a result of a lower second round score).

Munoz advanced to the quarterfinals last year where she was defeated by eventual champion Anna Nordqvist, a former Arizona State star who turned pro in December.

Jodi Ewart, a rising senior at New Mexico, and Caroline Masson, a rising sophomore at Oklahoma State, also advanced to the Round of 16.
