MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Phil Mickelson made the turn at even-par in the first round of the St. Jude Classic. He showed no signs of rust early in his first start since The Players. He birdied his first two holes. Mickelson easily could’ve been 4 under through four holes but the putter didn’t cooperated. His 3-wood tee shot into the water left of the 18th fairway (his ninth of the day) was his costliest mistake. It led to a double bogey.

It was good to see a smile on Mickelson’s face, to see him fist pump a made putt, and strategize with caddie Jim McKay before hitting a tape-measure blast.

The crowd, which began at 100 strong when he teed off at 7:27 a.m., is steadily growing. Pink, to honor wife Amy’s fight with breast cancer, is the prominent color.
