A month after leading Arizona State to victory at the NCAA Women’s Championship, Azahara Munoz picked up another title.
The recent Sun Devils graduate defeated former teammate and soon-to-be ASU sophomore Carlota Ciganda, 2 and 1, Saturday to win the Ladies’ British Amateur Championship at Royal St. David’s Golf Club in North Wales.
Munoz, 21, was 5 under in a 4-and-3 semifinal victory over Caroline Masson, who recently completed her freshman year at Oklahoma State. Ciganda, 19, topped Laura Collin, 2 and 1, to reach the finals.
In the championship match, Munoz was 2 up after nine holes, but Ciganda rallied. She won the par-4 10th and par-5 13th to square the match. On the par-5 15th, Ciganda missed a 6-footer for birdie, while Munoz two-putted for birdie and a 1-up lead.
After the pair halved the par-4 16th with bogeys, Munoz hit her approach to 2 feet on the par-4 17th to set up a clinching birdie.
Munoz, the 2008 NCAA individual champ and runner-up at the ’08 U.S. Women’s Amateur, will turn pro next month after the U.S. Women’s Open.
