You never know

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Phil Mickelson said his wife Amy, who will start breast cancer treatment July 1, has sent him “notes, texts, cards and hints” that she’d like him to bring the U.S. Open silver trophy to her hospital room.

Mickelson says he’ll do his best to oblige. Should he succeed, and take down Tiger Woods in the process, that wouldn’t be a book, it’d be a movie.

Never underestimate inspiration. But it will be an uphill battle for Mickelson.

For one thing, I’ve never seen him less cocksure as he was Wednesday morning in his pre-Open news conference. He talked about hoping and uncertainty – and that was in regard to playing the Open, not Amy’s plight.

He said he “hopes” the crowd’s emotional support will help carry him through.

He said he feels his game is ready but added, “You never know.”

He said he feels “emotionally better,” but added, “You never know.”

No doubt about it, all that sounded like doubt.
