Brehaut surprises in Round 1
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Jeff Brehaut, playing in the first group off No. 10, made the turn in 1-under 34 and is your early candidate for surprise Day 1 leader at the U.S. Open, a role played by Justin Hicks and Kevin Streelman in ‘08.
Brehaut isn’t new to U.S. Open success, though.
Brehaut, who turned 46 this past Saturday, is just two years removed from a tie for 17th at Oakmont. The long-hitting Californian has just two top-25s in 11 Nationwide Tour starts this year, though.
Brehaut made bogey on No. 10, but rebounded with birdies on Nos. 13 and the long par-3 17th. Brehaut is a member of the University of Pacific Hall of Fame, along with noted sports agent Scott Boras.
It’s safe to say Brehaut is “negotiating” Bethpage well thus far.
