Duval back atop a major leaderboard
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Despite his struggles over the years, David Duval has a way of finding his way onto leaderboards at golf’s Grand Slam events. Duval shot 67 Friday at Bethpage despite bogeys on two of his first three holes. He finished with three birdies on his final six holes.
He was tied for fourth halfway through last year’s British Open; he tied for 16th at his last U.S. Open appearance at Winged Foot in ‘06.
Duval, along with all of the players that started their round Friday, will start his second round later today. The players that completed their first round Friday morning will play their second rounds Saturday.
“I’ve been told I’m teeing off at 5:03, so that’s what I’m going to do,” Duval said. “I’ve always said when people complain about their tee time, ‘Hey, I just want a tee time.’ ”
Duval had to go through sectional qualifying in Columbus, Ohio, to get into the Open.
