Zack Fischer shot a final-round 72 Friday to win the Western Junior Championship at the University of Texas Golf Club. Despite playing his final four holes in 3 over, Fischer finished at 3-under 281, two shots ahead of Patrick Cantlay.
Fischer, 19, a rising junior at the University of Texas-Arlington, shot a 1-under 34 on the front nine. After making birdie at the 11th to get to 6 under, he made his only double bogey of the tournament at No. 15. He also bogeyed No. 18.
“I really didn’t feel nervous at the end. I just wasn’t hitting it good with my driver or 3-wood,” Fischer said. “My putting definitely saved me. I give all the credit to our coach Jay Rees. He’s a great short game teacher. Without him, I wouldn’t have won today.”
Cantlay, of Los Alamitos, Calif., finished with a final-round 72, while Austin Cody, of North Charleston, S.C., used three birdies on his final nine to card a 69 and finish third.
“I never got anything going,” Cantlay said. “I never really hit the ball solid, and I missed some key putts. You have to bring your ‘A’ game to win, and I didn’t.”
Eli Juren, whose 65 on Thursday was the low round of the tournament, closed with a 74 and slipped back into a tie for 11th place.
