Salas closed with a 32 on the back nine to take a one-shot lead after Round 1.

Lizette Salas, a rising junior at USC, shot 4-under 68 Monday to take the first-round lead in the stroke-play stage of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links.

Salas, who finished her sophomore season with the Trojans ranked No. 4 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot an even-par 36 on the front nine at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass., and closed with 32 on the back nine to take a one-shot lead over four players, including Auburn junior Cydney Clanton. Salas tied for 16th at the NCAA Championship.

Sophomore Jennifer Song, Salas’ teammate and the runner-up at the NCAA Championship in May, is three shots off the lead in a tie for ninth. She finished her freshman season No. 1 in Golfweek’s college rankings. Song lost to Tiffany Joh, 2 and 1, in the finals of this event last year.

Karen Chung, runner-up at the U.S. Girls’ Junior last year, is tied for 18th after a 1-over 73.

Stroke-play qualifying continues with 18 holes on Tuesday, with the low 64 scorers advancing to match play, which starts on Wednesday. The 36-hole final is scheduled for Saturday.
