Top-seeded Clemson struggled to 26-over 310 Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Northeast Regional. The Tigers are in sixth place, 13 shots behind leader Tennessee, who shot 12-over 296.

Clemson junior Kyle Stanley led the Tigers with a 72. He’s in a three-way tie for second, a shot behind leader Darren Renwick of Tennessee.

Clemson’s next best player was Luke Hopkins, who shot 76 and is tied for 18th. Clemson’s three other players shot 81. David May, the ACC Championship co-medalist, closed with an 8-over 44.

Ninth-seeded Virginia is third at 14-over 298 and was led by junior Kyle Stough, who is tied for second. Big Ten champ Illinois is in fifth.

The top 5 teams advance to the NCAA Championship at Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio, May 26-30.

The high scores may be a direct result of the difficulty of Galloway National Golf Club. In October at the Columbia Invitational, held at Galloway National, TCU won the team title with a 42-over 894. Florida’s Tim McKenney and TCU’s Tom Hoge tied for medalist honors at 8-over 221.
