Southwest: Texas Tech takes big lead
The five top seeds at the NCAA Men’s Southwest Regional were all within the top 5 at the end of first-round play.
Texas Tech has a nine-shot lead over Texas. Tech shot a 2-under 282 to set the pace, while Texas (291) and Florida (293) rounded out the top 3.
Top-seeded Stanford (294) is fourth. Fifth-seeded UNLV is in a tie for fifth with Lamar at 12-over 296.
Lamar’s Hugues Joannes and Texas’s Lance Lopez shared the individual lead with 3-under 68s. Both players had six birdies and three bogeys.
Texas Tech had four players in the top 6, including sophomore Nils Floren (pictured) who is in a tie for third after a 1-under 70.
Florida senior Billy Horschel, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 11 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, is tied for ninth after a 1-over 72.
Just 18 shots separate second-place Texas and 12th-place New Mexico State.
