Central: Bruins win; Hill earns medalist
North Carolina State’s Matt Hill made a major statement in the player-of-the-year race as he hung on for a one-shot victory in the NCAA Men’s Central Regional.
Hill earned the lone individual bid to the NCAA Championship as N.C. State finished in a tie for sixth and failed to advance.
The POY race is still in full effect. Another POY candidate, Washington’s Nick Taylor, finished one shot back of Hill to place second. Taylor shot 4-over 76 that included a quadruple-bogey 7 on No. 16. Hill birdied his last hole to win.
Marquette’s Mike Van Sickle is still in the running for player of the year, despite tying for 20th and missing out on the NCAA Championship. He shot a final-round 78.
Washington finished second to UCLA which won by seven shots. The Bruins were spurred on by Erik Flores, who posted 68.
Finishing in a tie for third were Georgia Tech and Ohio State. Ohio State head coach Jim Brown – who is retiring after 36 seasons as OSU coach – will return with his Buckeyes to Ohio for the national championship.
Duke rounded out the top five teams.
