Sonoma (Calif.) State started the final round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Championship nine shots out of the lead, but shot a final-round 291 to tie Cal St.-San Bernadino, then won a playoff to claim its first national championship in the program’s history and the third in school history.

The two teams finished tied at 43-over 1,179 at Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Wash. Columbus (Ga.) State shot a final-round 294 to finish third, three shots out of the playoff.

There was also a playoff to decide the individual title, which was won by Gavin Smith of Indiana (Pa.). Smith (74) and Ferris State’s Kelbi Lee (72) finished tied at 5-over 289.

Sonoma State’s Patrick Bauer (71) and Cal St.-San Bernadino’s Gene Webster (77) tied for third at 6 over par.
