Soldier-statesman Dwight D. Eisenhower can add one more honor to his lifetime of achievements: Hall of Famer.

Ike, the architect of the Allied victory in World War II and the 34th U.S. president, will be posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame Monday night. What he might have lacked in playing ability, he made up for in spirit. As an ambassador of golf, Eisenhower was instrumental in helping popularize the game in the U.S.

He’ll be memorialized tonight at the shrine in St. Augustine, Fla., with three of the game’s champions: Ireland’s Christy O’Connor (Veterans Committee), Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal (International) and American Lanny Wadkins (PGA Tour). Their stories follow:

• Dwight D. Eisenhower: Golf at the White House (by Adam Schupak)

• Christy O’Connor: A fluid swing forged by ‘Himself’ (by Alistair Tait)

• Jose Maria Olazabal: Dignified, determined and dazzling (by Alistair Tait)

• Lanny Wadkins: He didn’t know how to lay up (by Jeff Rude)

Inductions:

When: Monday, Nov. 2

Where: World Golf Village Hall of Fame, St. Augustine, Fla.
