Furman wins first event since 2007

Furman won its first title in two years Tuesday, closing with a 1-over 285 at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate.

The Paladins, No. 76 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished at 1-under 567 at the Country Club of Sapphire (N.C.) Valley, three shots ahead of No. 110 Kentucky (291) and No. 82 East Carolina (280).

Furman’s last victory came at the 2007 Raines Development Group Intercollegiate.

Paladins senior Garland Ferrell made three birdies and an eagle on the back nine in a final-round 3-under 68. He finished at 7-under 135 to win his first collegiate title. Akron’s Lucas Murray (69) was second at 137, and East Carolina’s David Watkins (70) finished third at 138.

Furman placed in the top 5 in each of its five fall season events.

No. 24 Chattanooga, the highest-ranked team in the field, finished eighth at 10-over 578.
