Texas A&M won its second title of the fall Tuesday at the Challenge at Onion Creek.

The 16th-ranked Aggies, who trailed No. 51 San Francisco by 21 shots after the first round, shot a school-record 5-under 275 in Round 2, then closed with a final-round best 278 to finish at 1-under 839 at the Onion Creek Club in Austin, Texas. The Dons opened with 265, but closed 288-289 to finish runner-up at 2-over 842. No. 126 Texas State (863) was third.

Texas A&M’s previous best 18-hole score in relation to par was 4 under at the 1981 TAIAW State Championship. It was just the second time in program history – and first since 1996 – that the Aggies won two fall tournaments.

“The last two rounds were absolutely amazing,” Texas A&M coach Trelle McCombs said. “Our patience was awesome and we just never gave up. The great thing is that everyone contributed.”

Texas A&M senior Julia Boland made two birdies and bogey in a closing 1-under 69 and won the individual title by a shot over teammate Ashley Freeman, the 2009 Big 12 champion. Boland finished at 4-under 206. Junior Sarah Zwartynski tied for 10th.

Boland shared the individual title Sept. 13 at the Texas A&M MoMorial to open the season, an event that that Aggies won. They followed with a 13th-place showing Sept. 20 at the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational and fourth-place finish Oct. 11 at the Tar Heel Invitational.

Last week, the Aggies tied for second the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio.
