Sue Billek Nyhus has stepped down as head coach at BYU, the university announced Tuesday.

Robbie Bosco, director of the BYU Varsity Club and quarterback of the Cougars' 1984 national-championship football team, will take over the program as an interim coach until a search for a new head coach can be properly administered.

Nyhus spent three seasons as an assistant coach at BYU before being named head coach in July 2001 when long-time coach Gary Howard retired. In the next eight seasons, Nyhus led BYU to six regional and two NCAA Championship appearances. The Cougars finished 17th at the national championship in 2007.

Nyhus also coached seven NGCA All-American Scholar Athletes and two NGCA All-Americans. She was named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2007.

“We appreciate Sue’s service to BYU,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “Her teams have enjoyed success, and we appreciate her concern for the student-athletes. We wish her all the best in the future.”

As a collegiate player at BYU from 1981-85, Nyhus received Academic All-American honors in 1985. She won the Utah State Women’s Amateur in 1985 and 1989, and was named UGA Player of the Year in 1999. Nyhus also played five years on the Women’s Professional Golf European Tour.

“I’m grateful for the chance I’ve had to coach at BYU for the past 11 seasons,” Nyhus said. “I’m honored to be one of a select few who have been fortunate enough to be an athlete, a coach and a BYU Hall of Fame inductee. I want to express appreciation to my assistant coaches and the student-athletes I’ve had the opportunity to coach.”

BYU is ranked No. 96 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.
