Virginia Derby Grimes defeated Carol Semple Thompson, 4 and 3, Monday in the opening round of match play in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. Grimes and Thompson, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, are two of the most well-known names in women's amateur golf.
The last time the pair faced off was at the 1993 Women’s Mid-Am, with Thompson winning, 1 up.
