Yaroslav Merkulov won the New York State Amateur and Junior.

Yaroslav Merkulov, the No. 2 player in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, has made a verbal commitment to Duke. Merkulov’s commitment gives the Blue Devils one of the best recruiting classes for the Class of 2010. Merkulov will join Austin Cody, Golfweek’s 15th-ranked junior, in Durham next fall.

Merkulov has quickly ascended the ranks after entering the U.S. Junior as a relative unknown. Merkulov advanced to the quarterfinals at Trump National, then shot a final-round 61 to win the New York State Junior by 10 shots and finished runner-up to Bobby Wyatt at the AJGA’s Junior Players. Merkulov also won this year’s New York State Amateur.

Merkulov’s commitment means Duke has put together two consecutive top-notch recruiting classes. I’m going to say it now: the Blue Devils men will be the best golf team on campus by the end of the 2010-11 season.
