South Carolina rolls at Rees Jones event

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

A week after losing in a heartbreaking playoff at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate, South Carolina completed a dominating victory Tuesday at the Rees Jones Collegiate, topping runner-up UNC Wilmington by 37 shots.

The Gamecocks placed four players in the top 10 at the Rees Jones Signature Course at Haig Point in Daufuskie Island, S.C., including medalist Paul Woodbury and runner-up George Bryan IV. Both players finished at 2-under 214. Woodbury won a playoff over his teammate on the second extra hole.

South Carolina closed with a 1-over 289 to finish at 5-over 869. After opening with 300, the Gamecocks shot 280 in the second round, highlighted by Woodbury’s 4-under 68 and Clint Tolleson’s 69. Tolleson, a freshman, had opened with 82.

UNC Wilmington (906) was second and Kennesaw State (909) was third. Michigan State and Pepperdine tied for fourth.

It was the Gamecocks’ second consecutive victory at the Rees Jones Collegiate. They won last year by 21 shots, as Woodbury and Wesley Bryan, George's younger brother, shared medalist honors.

South Carolina, No. 22 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, lost to Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 27 in a two-hole playoff at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate. The Gamecocks finished fifth at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate.
