Laura Coble and Martha Leach advanced to finals of the 2009 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

In Wednesday’s semifinal, Coble, 45, defeated two-time champion Meghan Stasi, 5 and 4. Leach, 47, ousted 1998 champion Virginia Derby Grimes, 1 up, with a 36-footer on the 18th at at Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in Ocala, Fla.

“I just willed that baby in,” Leach said. “I love the outcome. I didn’t sleep at all last night because I don’t know where the ball is going. I can’t hit it in the fairway. From midnight until 6 this morning, I wanted to get up and tinker with my swing.”

Coble had an easier time, finding herself 6 up over Stasi at the 13th tee. She closed out the match with a par-3 on No. 14.

“It’s a surprising thing, but it’s a wonderful thing,” Coble said. “Everything else is gravy.”
