Presidents Cup goes political
Sunday, October 11, 2009
SAN FRANCISCO – We went to a golf tournament and a political rally broke out.
Hey, perhaps that indicates further that the Presidents Cup is coming of age as a big-time event. It attracted not only the heavyweights from the political arena, but the fruitcakes, too.
First, the fruitcakes. As Tiger Woods and Y.E. Yank surveyed birdie putts at the par-4 12th, two women came out of the gallery holding pink flags reading, “Stop pushing the war.”
Marshals and security were a bit late to react, so the two women were able to get their purpose. “Congratulations, Obama. He won the (Nobel) prize, now end the war.”
Police officers apprehended the women and escorted them away. Not that ended the fun for political junkies. That’s because minutes later, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was spotted walking along with the Woods-Yang match.
“Niners need a new stadium,” was perhaps the best yell-out as Newsom walked by.
Not to be outdone, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice walked along with Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen.
