David Toms gets into college golf
Like most PGA Tour players, David Toms is proud of his alma mater. LSU will host the David Toms Intercollegiate on Monday-Tuesday, and Toms’ participation will go beyond just having his name on the tournament. He’ll be at Country Club of Louisiana for the event, and take part in the off-course activities, which highlight Toms’ favorite experiences while he was at LSU.
Most of the teams will tailgate outside LSU’s Tiger Stadium on Saturday, then watch the LSU-Auburn football game from seats in the stadium’s lower bowl. On Sunday, Toms will conduct a clinic and question-and-answer session for the players before they tee off for their practice rounds. The tournament’s banquet Sunday evening will feature traditional Louisiana cuisine.
“He loved the food, fellowship and football at LSU,” LSU head coach Chuck Winstead said. “He wanted to expose the players to all those things he enjoyed in college.”
Fourteen teams, including LSU's gridiron opponent Auburn, will be in the field. The Toms Intercollegiate will be an important opportunity for LSU to get some victories. The Tigers, Golfweek's preseason No. 12 team, are ranked 33rd in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings with a 21-21-0 record. Teams must have a winning record to be eligible for an at-large bid to the postseason.
"I'll let you know in April if I'm concerned," Winstead said. "The team is really close, but everyone kind of has one area that's holding them back. When we get that shored up, we'll be fine.''
