Who should get more playing opportunities?

MADISON, Miss. – Ended up in an interesting roundtable discussion, minus the table, on the Viking Classic putting green late Tuesday afternoon. Would’ve made for good TV for the golf junkie.

The topic for more than a half hour was playing opportunities for Q-School and Nationwide Tour graduates. Those kicking around the topic included Tommy Armour III, Jay Williamson, Harrison Frazar, Patrick Sheehan and Rick Price.

Williamson and Sheehan are adamant that the Tour needs more playing opportunities for the rank and file, particularly during the Fall Series. Williamson even suggested that the Nationwide Tour have 25 $1 million tournaments to give more players a chance to earn a living.

Armour, old school, wasn’t having any of it. He suggested that there should be fewer tournaments, a contrarian view in this circle. And as he has done often, he invoked the old Jim Colbert line from a players’ meeting in the early 1980s when the same subject was being discussed.

“The solution always is to play better,” he said. “Twenty-one tournaments isn’t enough opportunity?”

At one point, your correspondent here suggested that the group come into the press tent and check out the salaries there. Only problem, I mentioned, is that no one’s in the tent because there aren’t many golf writing jobs anymore.
