Q-School: Bare hangs on for Pinewild win
Andy Bare held on to his solid start at PGA Tour qualifying school, winning the first stage of qualifying Friday with a 10-under 278 total. Bare, who walked on to UNC-Greensboro and has three wins on the Tarheel Tour, started the week with a first-round 6-under 66 at Pinewild Country Club’s Magnolia Course in Pinehurst, N.C., and capped off the tournament with a 2-under 70.
Jay Woodson, of Richmond, Va., was second with a 9-over 279, and Matt Hendrix, of Greenville, S.C., was third at 8-over 280. Both have played on the Nationwide Tour.
Recent Georgia Tech grad Cameron Tringale tied for fifth with his 4-under 284. Tringale played in this year’s Walker Cup, and qualified for the U.S. Open (where he missed the cut).
Jamie Lovemark, who won the 2007 NCAA Championship while at USC, also will advance to the second stage of Q-School. Lovemark, who lost a playoff Sunday at the Frys.com Open, shot a 5-over 77 in the final round and was at 2-under 286 for the tournament. He built a lead at the beginning of the week with rounds of 69-71-69, and tied for eighth.
Adam Mitchell, another Walker Cupper who recently graduated from Georgia, also tied for eighth.
Nicolas Geyger, the recent Tulsa grad who finished second at the pre-qualifier at the Golf Club of Dallas in September, squeaked through the first stage, tying for 20th.
