To kick off the weekend’s festivities, an opening ceremony was held on the driving range. A color guard presenting the American flag, along with the singing of the national anthem and a fly-over courtesy of Northern Michigan Aviation was part of the ceremony. There also were various golf skills challenges set and food and drinks for all to enjoy. Before the festivities began, the crowd was introduced to the parents of Cpl. Brock Bucklin - Duane and Dawn. The two spoke to the crowd for a few moments.
Bucklin, who lost his life in Iraq on May 31, 2006, was the inspiration behind Dan Rooney’s vision on Patriot Golf Day. Rooney, who is a PGA of America golf professional and an F16 fighter pilot for the United States Air Force, is the founder of this special day.
The idea came to Rooney after a flight he was on landed in Grand Rapids, Mich. Looking out his window, Rooney witnessed the Bucklin family, including the fallen soldier’s young son, receive the body of their loved family member.
Several of the players in this week’s field stayed for the ceremony.
