Jr. Fantasy Golf: The Junior Players
Friday, September 4, 2009
The Junior Players Championship is this week, and it's time for the Golfweek staffers to make their picks. This is one of the strongest fields of the year, and it wasn't easy choosing just one player. Let's hope we got it right. Check out the picks:
Eric Soderstrom (350): Justin Thomas. Knows what it’s like to win an invitational (Footjoy) and has no problem going low on the big stage (Wyndham).
Ray McCarthy (260): Yaroslav Merkulov. Kid is on fire this summer. He had a great run at the U.S. Junior, and earlier this month, he fired a course-record 61 to win the New York State Junior. He also won the New York State Amateur this summer. He knows how to win, and Merkulov is brimming with confidence. No reason he can't take that into the Junior Players.
Sean Martin (245): Byeong-Hun An. He won the U.S. Amateur last week. Enough said.
Dan Mirocha (170): Talor Gooch: Advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur and is due for a top-5 finish in an invitational.
Scoring: Win (50 points), runner-up (30 points), top-5 (20 points), top-10 (10 points), top-20 (5 points). Zero points for anything outside the top 20. Bonus points when specified. (Only rule: You can’t pick the same player two consecutive weeks.)
