Ishikawa has chance at Presidents Cup
Saturday, September 5, 2009
NORTON, Mass. — He’s not the captain, but if he were, Geoff Ogilvy knows where he’d be throwing one of his Presidents Cup picks.
To Japan and teenage sensation Ryo Ishikawa.
“How can you not pick him?” Ogilvy said after the second round of the Deutsche Bank Championship. “He’s playing better golf than any of us.”
Currently 20th in the standings, Ishikawa is also two strokes ahead through 54 holes of this week’s tournament in Japan, meaning he could turn in his third win of the season. No, it’s not the PGA Tour, but Ogilvy gives the nod to “current form,” something International team captain Greg Norman has preached.
Norman will name his two captain’s picks Tuesday. Rory Sabbatini, 11th in the standings, missed the cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship, while none of the next players in the standings – Jeev Milkha Singh, Shingo Katayama, Adam Scott, or Mathew Goggin – have exactly stepped forward and screamed “pick me.”
