Nightmare on TPC’s 17th

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Talk about a horror story from the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium Course. Justin Thomas, the 16-year-old who qualified for the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship by winning the FootJoy Invitational in June, was even par through 34 holes. Then he got to No. 17.
Thomas hit his first shot over the green and onto the walking path. From there, he chunked his next shot and hit his third back over the green and into the water. After making the trek back to the tee, Thomas plunked shot No. 5 into the water short, then put No. 7 on the green. Unfortunately it spun back, leaving Thomas in three-putt territory. He walked off the green the second time with a 10 on his card.
Give him a par in place of the septuple bogey, however, and Thomas finishes T-10. At least he could joke about it by the time the final round was over, and look back fondly on one of the better parts of the week.
“I think I’ve played more ping-pong this week than practiced,” he said of his off-course hobby. “Actually, I know I have.”
