Balicki’s best bets
Senior writer Ron Balicki, aka “Wrong Ron,” makes his selections for the upcoming men’s season:
No. 1 team: Washington. The Huskies won five times last year, and head coach Matt Thurmond has all five NCAA starters returning, headed by All-Americans Nick Taylor, Richard Lee and Darren Wallace.
No. 1 player: Nick Taylor, Washington. A sweep for the Huskies. Taylor had five victories last season and four runners-up, including the Pac-10 Championship and NCAA regionals. And you know he’d like to match fellow Canadian Matt Hill of North Carolina State, last season’s Player of the Year.
Keep an eye on: Augusta State (team), Kent State junior John Hahn (individual).
Surprise sleepers: North Florida (team), Arkansas sophomore Ethan Tracy (individual).
